Five Days of Christmas: DESSERT

christmas dessert

This, friends is the winning dessert in my book, it smells like Christmas to me, if i could find a candle or diffuser that smelled like Apple Crumble I would have a drag-arm-and-tip-everything-in-basket moment.  So if you have found one, please please comment and let me know, I would be so grateful!

When I first made this, I was astounded at how easy it is, simply because I always think desserts are so precise and take a heck of a long time to prepare and then its torture waiting, smelling and watching as it bakes.  This is quick and makes the apartment smell like Apple Crumble for hours after I’ve plucked it out of the oven.

This apple crumble is now my go-to dessert to impress people who come over for the first time.  In fact, Sean & I went away with a few friends about 2 months ago and I whipped this up quick and easy – I definitely won a few hearts and stomachs.  Everyone was highly impressed and as usual always overwhelmed that you know your way around a kitchen.

If you are going to the first Christmas with the in-laws, hosting your own Christmas dinner or simply heading over to the folks place, this is your wow-dessert.  If you said you would bring a salad, you still have time to change your mind, tell them you’re bringing dessert and watch as they love you more, from the first whiff of this apple crumble.

APPLE FILLING:

Ingredients:

1,5 kg Starking or any softer apples (they cook faster).

3 tbs brown sugar

3 tsp cinnamon, can be adjusted depending on how much cinnamon flavour you want.

Method:

Peel, core and cut apples.

Place in a pot with with the sugar & cinnamon, on medium to high heat.

The sugar & cinnamon will melt together and become a saucy goodness and the apples will soften.

If you can push a fork through the apples with ease (usually takes between 10-15 minutes), remove from heat.

Place apple filling on top of the crumble and then sprinkle leftover crumble over the top.

Bake at 200°C for 40-45 minutes or until top is golden brown.

Remove from oven and serve warm with ice-cream, custard or cream.

CRUMBLE:

Ingredients:

2 cups flour

1 cup sugar

2 tsp baking powder

250g margarine

pinch of salt

Method:

Sift all dry ingredients together.

Cut small cubes of margarine into dry ingredients.

Crumble margarine and dry ingredients between your fingers.

Grease baking tray and place half the crumble mixture at the bottom and half on top of filling.

The Creamery has a great selection of amazing flavours to pair with this apple crumble, I’d suggest their Rosetta Roastery Coffee, so yum!

Let me know if you try this recipe, what you think of it and what everyone else thinks of it?
